Richard and Frances have gone home to be with Our Lord but here are some notes we have gathered about them. On Richard: Richard Hook was born in 1938 in Godstone, Surrey. He trained at Reigate School of Art. After National Service with the Queen's Royal Regiment he worked in advertising, before becoming art editor of the much-praised children's magazine "Finding Out" during the 1960s. In 1966 he became a freelance illustrator, earning an international reputation and specializing in military and historical subjects. He was married with three children, all working in publishing and three grandchildren. His interests are playing guitar, painting and studying the costume and history of the North American Indians. Richard once wrote "First, I imagine I'm there-- seeing and experiencing the actions and conversations going on between people---and then I try to picture it the way I see it. Creative imagination of a bible scene takes knowledge, so before I paint, I research. From my books and picture files I note details of Bible times and make numerous sketches of ideas I have. The more I nail down detail, the easier it is to project myself into the scene.. Sometimes I pose a family with three young children into scenes and take photos I can use for art reference of facial and body expressions. I even modeled a Bible robe myself once so I could see how a robe fits and hangs... Sometimes I pose as a character in my picture. "I never start a painting until I have put myself imaginatively into the story I'm illustrating, because that's the way I create believable pictures that telegraph feelings to my audience". On Frances: Frances Hook was a well renowned artist and illustrator. She had always loved working in pastels and been greatly influenced by French painters like Renoir, Degas and Mary Cassatt. Frances created a line of American Beauty Girls that included Babies and the All American Boys that were very popular with the American public! It is believed that Frances Hook died in 1983 due to a car accident. Today there is a museum in Mishicot, Wisconsin in memory of her great accomplishments called The Old School. She was best known for illustrating Children´s Bibles with drawings of Jesus, working with her husband Richard. |
